CUORIDIPIETRA

Blindfolded statues: reflections on the human in the anthropocene

MiTch Laurenzana’s “cuoridipietra” (hearts of stone) project is a visionary fusion where classical sculpture meets the digital frontier. By digitizing and altering symbols of immortal beauty, Laurenzana reveals the contradictions of our time: ancient statues, blindfolded and reinterpreted through Artificial Intelligence, invite us to rediscover our own humanity.
The blindfold is a deliberate silence. It forces a pause from the digital world’s immediacy, urging a move into a contemplative dimension. Here, AI is not a mere technical tool but a medium to unveil the "hidden soul" of the stone—a soul that mirrors our own: hard yet fragile, powerful yet vulnerable.
[...]
This hybridization of languages transforms technology into a lens for exploring vulnerability. Stone—the ultimate symbol of eternity—becomes exposed and transient, creating a visual oxymoron that reflects the human condition, suspended between strength and weakness.
“Cuoridipietra” offers no simple answers. It is an act of demystification that challenges us to face the hypocrisies of the modern world. These blindfolded figures remind us that even in our blindness, we can learn to see with different eyes, recognizing our fragilities as the very essence of being human.
